The Hottest New (Old) Trend In Outdoor Furniture - Adirondack Is Back!

It's not surprising that an American classic like the Adirondack Chair has made a great come back in just the last two years. This trend is quickly spreading because folks across America are choosing to spend their free time relaxing in a meticulously planned outdoor living area. I myself remember as a 6 year old, sinking completely into one of these old familiar chairs, with my feet dangling just barely over the edge, while grandpa and I peeled the apples we picked and talked about the warm, homeade apple pie piled high with melting ice cream that we knew granny was going to have for us after supper that night. With my lemonade on the wide arm rest, the breeze was mellow and warm. Grandpa's stories made time fly. It is really no big mystery why we love to sit back and relax outside, whether that's out on the patio, out on the porch, on your deck, or in your garden area. What better way to do that than to sit back in a high backed, familiar, deep seated Adirondack chair and leave your troubles behind.

Just where did this piece of Americana come from? Well, the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, of course. This style was trendy at the several mountain hide aways and resorts that were so trendy back then. By the time the 40's came around they were just about everywhere. The furniture trend began to move to the south and headed west quickly. As the Adirondack style started to get more popular, and made its way around the country, regional influences started showing up. The furniture design was utilized in an assortment of styles of outdoor furniture which include; rocking chairs, gliders, porch swings, benches, and thanks to our Canadian neighbors, a conversation piece called the "tete a tete" which translates literally to; "head to head". This nostalgic design combines a couple of chairs with a table between them built as a single piece. What an amazing way to spend a cozy Saturday with somebody who loves you!

You'll be amazed and happy to find a large variety of Adirondack style furniture on the market now. Not only has the original furniture design withstood the winds of time, but the whole Adirondack phenomenon has exploded with a wonderful assortment of styles, material, colors, and finishes. Traditional Adirondack furniture is built from wood that is known for resisting decay and bugs including cypress, cherry, oak, or white or red cedar. The wood that is selected is going to vary depending on the part of the country as do specific styles. A hot new extra in classical Adirondack is patio furnishings constructed from polymer "lumber" that is literally made out of recycled plastic packaging, old milk cartons, and such. Not only is this an environmentally friendly way to invest in furniture, but you have some advantages with longevity, durability, ease of care, and your colors aren't going to eventually fade because the pigments are mixed all the way through the plastic resin with UV inhibitors for protection.
