How much weight can a skip hold?
Well, an 8 cubic yard skip can take up to 8 tonnes into it, although they are weight tested up to 10 tonnes. The reason they couldn’t take any more than 8 tonnes is because the skip wagons that handle these skips are usually around 2 tonnes in weight, so the total legal weight of the skip lorry and full skip combined is 10 tonnes.
Theoretically any smaller sized skip could also take the same weight, but it is unlikely as getting a material heavy enough to make that weight isn’t going to happen.
Most 4 yard skips are carried on the back of 7.5 tonne skip lorries, which weigh just under 2 tonnes themselves (depending on how much petrol they have in them) so a 4 yard midi skip should be able to carry up to 5.5 tonnes of waste (again, unlikely that you’ll get enough of one kind of heavy waste in a skip like this).
Skips that are 10-16 cubic yards in capacity are also carried on 10-tonners, and this means they cannot take more than 8 tones each, which is why they are usually used for large mixed waste jobs.
Above this, we have RORO’s (Roll On, Roll Off) skips that are between 16 cubic yards and 50 cubic yards. These are carried on 32 tonner lorries (“8 wheelers”) that wiegh about 12 tonnes, thereby giving the skips a maximum weight of 20 tonnes.
I hope that answers that question. Feel free to ask any more…
