How long to hire a skip?

We got this email from a customer, Andrew Booth, yesterday and I thought it brought up some interesting points:

"Excellent site! Having been in the building trade for over 20 years until an accident forced my retirement, I can say without a doubt that your site really does make a difference to how skips can be ordered, compared and enquiries dealt with in an efficient manner ........... well done!
My enquiry is about shorter term hire than the 21 days that you quote for.
Do you have a shorter hire term and if so, what would the rates be for a 4 yarder? We simply need to shift some rubbish from the garden ready for preparation to relandscape.
I look forward to hearing from you soon."

The whole matter of how long a skip can be hired for is an interesting one. The bottom line is you can have a skip for as short a time or as long a time as you want. The reason we provide skip hire "...for up to 21 days" is because that is a "catch all" time frame that meets the needs of 99% of our customers. If you do have different requirements to this, please feel free to ask - we can only say no (but usually say "Yes"!).

Interestingly, when we started online skip hire back in 2003, we did charge an additional daily rate for skips that were kept for more than 3 days as a way of incentivising people to fill their skips more quickly so we could get them back out on the road working again, but it was too confusing and annoying so we dropped the idea in favour of going with a majority rule where the price you see is the price you pay, inclusive of all the expensive elements: heavy haulage, high insurance, high recyling costs, landfill tax, wages, license costs and so on. It is because these are the expensive elements that it is not economically viable for us to charge less for a shorter hire period as it doesn't cost us much more to leave the skip out (except in terms of lost revenue from not being on another newer job).

It would actually cost us more to offer lower rates for shorter hire periods than the advertised 21 days because (and you'll know this if you've ever hired a skip) circumstances always have a habit of changing (builders not turning up, for example) so...the key for us is to be as flexible as possible and responsive to your changing needs. Always feel free to call us on 08000 82 10 82 or email us if you have any unusual requests or circumstances - we enjoy the challenge of solving your waste problems!
