Basketball and Skip Hire
If you haven’t been following the blog recently, we’re reporting on the desperate attempts of junior basketball team; the Withington Warriors to make the Winter Play-Offs.
The TopSkips skip hire sponsored side needed to win 4 of 4 games in January and they’d got off to a good start, winning the first two. Here’s the report of their 3rd match, written by Team Coach – James Quinn.
23rd Jan: Salford Vikings
“Although they were out of contention for the play-offs themselves, the Vikings had proved themselves awkward customers, not least doing the ‘fouling out’ incident reported in September’s blog.
Again the team faced a last minute injury blow with Tobias Emare and Elliott Quinn both forced to withdraw through illness.
Despite this; the team, finding a consistency lacking in the earlier part of the season, was completely unfazed by the absences and with Andrew back in the side, the team brought home another three points.
A win in the final league match would now guarantee Warriors fourth spot and the chance to join Amaechi All Stars, Wright Robinson Sports College and Alder All Stars in the Semi Finals.”
Final Score: Warriors 28 – Salford Vikings 18
Nail-biting stuff, tune in tomorrow to find out if the Warriors made it into the Winter Play-Offs.

Skip Hire and Junior Basketball
Right, where were we? Ah yes, on Friday I blogged about TopSkips skip hire sponsored Withington Warriors. The junior basketball team had secured the first of four desperately needed victories. Only by winning all four could they have any hope of making the Winter Play-Offs. Here’s how game two went; report by Team Coach, James Quinn:
16th Jan: Belle Vue Blazers
“Sometimes in sport – as in life, it is important to lay a few ghosts to rest. Back in November, in the Warriors only previous encounter with the Blazers, Warriors had come off at at half time with a twenty point lead and the game well and truly in the bag. Or so we thought.
In the best comeback I have seen in six years of coaching at the Amaechi Centre, Belle Vue caught us, passed us and held on for a fairly astonishing win.
We were gutted, shell-shocked and disappointed at throwing away an apparently unassailable lead. However, there are days when you have to give credit where it’s due and that day; Coach Kalu Redford and his team were pretty awesome in the second half.
But that was November, now it was January and defeat for either side meant no play-off place. Things didn’t start well with late news that Warriors’ ‘veteran’ and leading scorer, Andrew Gill was unfit to play came as very unwelcome news.
However, as if galvanized by Andrew’s absence, Warriors began strongly, got into a lead and never lost their grip. A real team effort ensured there was never any complacency this time and the Warriors ended up with a comfortable win. Two games to go and the play-offs were looking a little less distant than they had done at Christmas.”
Final Score – Belle Vue Blazers 31 – Warriors 39
Two down, two to go and great to see the Warriors in top form. Tune in tomorrow afternoon for a full report of match 3… another must win.

Skip Hire sponsored Basketball

Skip Hire and Basketball? Oh yes – you better believe it.
That’s right, it’s time for an update on TopSkips skip hire sponsored junior basketball team, the Withington Warriors. There’s been a whole basket-load of drama over the past few months so it’s over to team coach James Quinn for the latest:
Following a narrow defeat by table-topping Amaechi All-Stars just before Christmas, the equation for the Warriors, was simple; win all four games in January (and hope other results went our way) – or kiss goodbye to one of the four places in the Winter League Play-Offs.
This sounded like a tall order for a team whose Achilles heal this season has been inconsistency. To be fair, injuries and other absences have played their part in the Warriors’ unpredictability but it all pointed to a series of tough and tense January Friday nights at the Amaechi Basketball Centre.
JAN 9th – Warriors Vs Alder All Stars
2009 began as the season had begun back in September with a fixture against Alder All Stars. Then, the Warriors had been edged out by a narrow margin in a thriller. In November, the teams had fought to a draw in a game where the Warriors had, at one stage, held an eight point lead.
There was no margin for error this time but with the game well underway and half-time approaching; Alder had a seven point lead, not a good start. However, on the stroke of half-time, a hard-earned basket from long-time player, Elliott Quinn, reduced the deficit to five points and gave the Warriors a real impetus going into the interval.
Towering Performances
The second half was nip and tuck but the fantastic determination of the whole team, personified by towering performances by new signings, Angus Bangs and Tobias Emare gradually gave Warriors the upper hand.
The final six point margin of victory accurately reflected, the Warriors second half superiority and the hope of a place in the February play-offs was still alive!
Final Score – Alder All Stars 30 – Warriors 36
So, with one win under their belt, the Warriors had started 2009 exactly as planned and took a step closer to the four wins from four they needed in January to be sure of a place in the Winter Play-offs. Friday Jan 16th saw the next must win game against ‘Belle Vue Blazers’ – you can find out how they did against Belle Vue in Monday’s Blog.

Wow, pretty tense stuff and did you see the names of those new signings? ‘Tobias Emare’ and ‘Angus Bangs’ – possibly the two best names in the world ever. I feel for Tobias though, I bet he’s usually the guy with the most unusual name, but not when Angus is in town. Go on Warriors!

double gel bras in a skip!
We got an 8 yard skip today full to the brim of…double gel bras!
We counted 459 pairs of the wobbly wonders – the question is: where are all the women that owned these items, and how can we recycle them?
