Carmarthenshire residents use skip hire in electrical recycling effort
Residents in Carmarthenshire have recycled old hairdryers, kettles, vacuum cleaners and even a video camera in a new recycling effort.
People were encouraged to bring unwanted electrical items to two WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) events in the county.
In total, 626kg of old electricals were recycled, with the residents needing to use skip hire to dispose of all the waste.
Council recycling officer Karen Fulham said: “It is important we reduce and recycle as much of our waste as possible.
“Everyone knows you can recycle paper and tins, but few of us realise that old electrical items such as toasters and power tools can also be recycled.”

Lancaster skips / tip full and cheap skip hire may be the only option
The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Lancaster has been criticised for turning away residents who want to dispose of their waste, claiming their Lancaster tip and Lancaster skips were full.
This comes just weeks after the closure of Claughton refuse centre, despite a campaign from local residents to keep it open.
Retired joiner Philip Darbyshire was turned away by staff at HWRC when he went to dispose of three bags of plaster.
“All the hardcore skips were full. What happens if you go back and it’s full again? It’s a necessity,” said Mr. Darbyshire.
“They should be able to cater for it. I think the overload from Garstang doesn’t help.”
With the problems in using the HWRC, it seems that cheap skip hire may be the only option.

Hand grenade found dumped; skip hire Warwickshire
Bomb disposal experts were called to a tip after shocked workers found a hand grenade dumped inside a skip, the find was discovered in Nuneaton after a local individual ordered skip hire Warwickshire.
The explosive find sparked an emergency evacuation at the public waste recycling centre in Tuttle Hill, Nuneaton.
The wartime device – which was presumed to be live – was among rubbish in skips at the site and police immediately evacuated and cordoned off the area to keep the public away.
Bomb disposal experts quickly arrived on the scene and made the weapon safe before removing it from the site.
The many weird and wonderful things we receive from the public at our waste recycling centres never cease to amaze us,” said county councillor Alan Cockburn. “As usual, it is down to the diligence of our staff who do their utmost to make sure that the items ultimately go to the most appropriate destination.”

Residents stuck with small bins – try skip hire Bristol?
Bristol City Council have told some residents within the area that they will be receiving smaller wheelie bins, while 1,400 other homes are allowed to keep their much larger wheelie bin.
Homes across the city with 240-litre black bins are being given 180-litre replacements as part of a rubbish collection overhaul, which is aimed at encouraging people to recycle rather than just throw their recyclable waste in the normal bins.
However, certain households in the city have been told they can keep their larger bin because they meet special criteria and are deemed to require more space for their rubbish. These include homes occupied by large families and houses converted into accommodation for large numbers of students.
Many people are unhappy with being given a small wheelie bin, so much so that they may even decide upon using skip hire Bristol to dispose of the excess waste that won’t fit into their new bins.

Stoke-on-Trent council chasing mounting skips debt
Taxpayers owe Stoke-on-Trent City Council around £8.6 million after a continued failure to pay for a whole host of services over a 15 year period.
The authority have now set about trying to claim back the millions of pounds in minor debts from thousands of residents that live across the city.
Much of the money that is owed is down to the authority allowing its residents to use services with the option of settling the bill at a later date. This has forced the council to introduce new policies that force them to pay upfront “wherever possible”.
The hiring of skips is amongst the range of services that the debt covers, which also includes allotments, licensing fees and planning costs and waste collection from businesses.
The council has begun the process of selling off a package of rent, tax and other debts to a debt collection agency in a last-ditch attempt to reclaim them.
Terry Cope, chairman of Greenfields Residents’ Association, said: “It just shows the level of incompetence there has been. Considering they are making cuts all across the city, it’s no wonder people call us Joke-on-Trent.”
The council did not say who owed them the most money, though, it was revealed that the debts have piled up since Stoke-on-Trent gained unitary status in 1997.
Councillor Sarah Hill, cabinet member for finance, said: “It’s now about how we manage it from here on in. We have got to be much more savvy about what we expect of people.”
After changes in the policy, the council have said that collection rates for the debts are steadily improving.

Waste collection proving unpopular – time for our skip hire Cornwall service?
A new waste collection service in Cornwall has left a couple fuming over the expense and design of the recycling bags and boxes.
The new containers received by Marc and Marianne Postins are part of Cornwall Council’s new waste and recycling strategy that they say will make big savings and streamline the current system.
However, the Postins have said that what they’ve been given is far more than they actually need. Before the changes, they could store their recycling neatly in a corner, but now it takes up far more space in their kitchen.
“As a household we have been recycling for many years and have not had a single problem until now. But have you seen the new stuff they want you to put your waste in?” said Mrs Postins. The volume of all these containers is unbelievable. I really don’t want soggy, old nylon bags in my kitchen. I am more than willing to recycle, I am more than willing to wash the containers but I am not willing to dry the containers or wipe the floor every time I put something in the recycling.”
The council have issued each household with a black box for glass bottles and jars; a blue sack for newspapers, magazines, telephone directories, catalogues, junk mail and white envelopes; a red sack for plastic bottles, drink cans, food tins and aerosols and an orange sack for cardboard, brown paper, coloured paper, wrapping paper and greeting cards. This has been put in place for the residents to sort their recycling, rather than using external skip hire Cornwall services to dispose of the waste in one go and recycle the contents later.
“The new rubbish and recycling contract will save the Council £3 million a year over the course of the eight-year contract,” said a spokesperson for Cornwall Council. Unlike the previous plastic bags used for recycling in homes in the former North Cornwall district, the new recycling equipment has been designed to be waterproof and weather resistant to allow it to be left outside if there is no room indoors.”
