Fly tipping is costing us all; skip licence information

Bridlington Council is requesting that smaller businesses are able to dispose of their waste for free.
In a statement a local councilor said “It’s costing the council more to go round and pick all this rubbish than what it would be to let them go free.”
It’s estimated that around £100,000 in this council alone is spent on cleaning up tippers waste per year meaning tax payers money is going directly toward keeping our streets clean.

Fly-tipping (also known as ‘fly dumping’, and sometimes shortened to ‘tipping’) is a British term for dumping waste illegally instead of at an authorised rubbish dump. It is the illegal deposit of any waste onto land, i.e. waste dumped or tipped on to a site which has no official skip licence to accept waste.

The term is derived from the verb ‘tip’, meaning ‘to throw out of a vehicle’ and on the ‘fly’, meaning “on the wing” which is to throw away carelessly or casually

Skip hire industry acknowledges a new form of recycling

A UK provider of recycling and environmental technology based in Cambridge have recently attracted some fresh backing for the commercialisation of its technology for the recycling of plastic and aluminium laminate packaging.

Here, at the heart of our busy skip hire head office we were interested to find out that a syndicate of investors have just secured the deal including Cambridge Enterprise, (the university’s commercialised arm) along with business angels from both Cambridge Capital Group and Cambridge Angels.

Though The Cambridge University syndicate have declined to reveal the exact amount raised it is believed to be some serious Wonga!

Thus far plastic/aluminium laminate packaging has been non recyclable; the company’s patented technology offers a new recycling route. This new technology segregates the material into its constituent components providing clean aluminium that can be used as fuel or chemical feedstock.

Dos and Don’ts for Skip Hire

We get asked all the time at Topskips whether a customer can put absolutely anything in a skip. Although they are mainly used for getting rid of rubbish, there are a few rules and regulations on what can go in a skip. Things like fridges and freezers, televisions, tyres, aerosols, strip lights, batteries, asbestos, gas cannisters and food waste are classed as hazardous. They need special care in their disposal which costs money. If you do need to get rid of any of the above, just ask one of our lovely sales people over the phone on 08445 60 77 10 and they can arrange disposal of it for you. Or you could e-mail us and we’ll be happy to inform you further.

Skip Hire Diving Saves Company Thousands

Staff at yummy cosmetics firm Burts Bees have decided to go skip diving with all their waste that was destined for landfill. Skip hire forms a massive part of the company’s refuse, so scrutinising what actually went to landfill made the company rethink their waste management programme. They managed to recycle 50% of what was going to landfill, saving the company $25,000 annually!

Skip Hire! On Fire!

Skip Hire can be dangerous. It’s kind of common sense NOT to set fire to the waste in a skip. Apart from the obvious dangers of the fire spreading, or something exploding in the skip, whoever hired this skip would have received a hefty bill from the skip company. Skips are about £500 to buy new so treat your skip with care!
