Fridge Recycling Using Skip Hire
“Can you throw a fridge in a skip?”
A gentleman from Essex asked me this today and the answer was a resolute ‘Kind of!’.
Fridge recycling can be done using skips, but it will cost you.
Why is this? Well, because fridges contain CFC gases, they need to be treated carefully, and disposed of in a specific manner. Normal waste in skips are usually sorted at the Material Recycling Facility and then put into waste streams to be recycled. However, fridges are classed as hazardous waste and need to be treated in accordance to EA regulations.
Fridges can be taken away with the skip, but this comes at an extra charge. This charge covers the extra haulage and special treatment.
If you’ve been lumbered with an old fridge that you need to get rid of, speak to one of the gang at Topskips on 0844 60 77 10.

What is a skip hire permit?
You’re asking the right people! From John O’Groats to Land’s End, we have skip hire permits just about covered.
A permit is permission off the local council to allow skips on their public highway. So if you’re a householder who needs a skip for the week but doesn’t have a piece of private land like a driveway to put the skip on, then a permit must be applied for. Most of the time, the skip company can organise the paperwork for you. However, some councils (All Scottish councils for example) demand the hirer of the skip organises the permit. And the bad news is, it costs money. If you’re lucky, your local council will just charge an administration fee around £10. However some councils, (stand up, Wandsworth council in London!) can charge over a hundred pounds.
And if you think you can get away without applying for one, think again. Council workers survey the streets on a daily basis looking for skips that haven’t been registered with a permit, and the fines that follow if they see a skip without a permit are steep, to say the least. One company in Sheffield was charged £1500 recently for this very offence!
If you need skip hire with a permit, ring Topskips on 0844 560 7710 to discuss your options.

Why is skip hire the price it is?
The guys on the phone get asked that a lot. There will be Mr X on the phone who last ordered a skip in 1985, and is expecting to pay a similar price to the £40 he paid back then. Alas, a lot of things have happened for the price to rise, one of the biggest things is Landfill Tax which goes up 33% every year. There is also the haulage costs, drivers wages, the hire of the skip and the sorting of the waste when the skip is collected. It all adds up.
Beware of the skip companies offering “Cheapest Skip Hire!” – these type of companies often fail to deliver, when they do deliver the skip often resembles a bent piece of steel, and you risk having the skip outside your house for weeks, sometime months, on end. You could also be paying to have your waste flytipped. One thing with flytipped waste is the onus usually rests with the waste producer – ie. you. A hefty fine normally follows and much stress and bother.
My advice? Get a company who have all the right certification, who recycle a high percentage of the waste and who makes sure the job goes according to plan from start to finish. Call, the ultra-responsible, ultra-environmentally friendly Topskips on 0844 5607710 or book skip hire online for all skip hire needs.

Need skip hire to throw away bulky furniture
This is a question we received from a puzzled customer in Harrow, Middlesex today.
Question: What size skip do I need to throw away a single bed?
Answer: First thing’s first, just remember to make sure there’s nobody sleeping in the bed before you throw it in the skip! Although skips come in all different shapes and skip sizes, the answer is pretty simple – anything over a 4 cu yd skip will safely contain a single bed. The 4 cu yd skip is 6 ft long, from the widest part at the top, so this may be a bit too small for your job. A 6 cu yd builder skip and above will be ideal for any household furniture including beds, wardrobes and cupboards. Always ask about the dimensions of a skip when you are making an enquiry.
However, rather than worrying about whether you’re making the best choice, just ring up the thoroughly knowledgeable people at Topskips and let them help you through the booking process – ring 0844 560 7710 for friendly, skip-related advice. And if you’re thinking of hiring a skip out of office hours, just book online. Easy peasy!
