Skip Hire Ping Pong!

Well here we are, the 7th and last in our series of skip conversions by London based designer Oliver Bishop-Young.
Over the last 7 weeks, the TopSkips skip hire blog has seen some fascinating adaptations including a skip swimming pool, skate ramp, park and even a home.
But why did Oliver do it?
“My skip conversion work has been exposing the potential left in what people throw into skips and the architectural tool skips provide for claiming space in an urban environment”.
A great idea and it’s fair to say that Olivers ‘blinged up’ skip conversions are a fantastic use of a challenging space with this weeks offering most definitely bringing something special to the table!
Over to Oliver: “I was asked to produce a skip conversion for the YCN Live event and found a table tennis table in a skip and simply repositioned it”.
Oh Olly, you’re too modest. What a cracking idea, I mean I’ve heard skips can pong, but I didn’t know they could ping-pong! It’s a great design and as Oliver says:
“It also housed a bat and ball holder that works the same way a shopping trolley does. It requires a pound to use the bats but you get it back when you return the bat, that was designed by Jonathan Attenborough”.
Brilliant, once again with a little help from Oliver we see a skip bringing joy to a community, a huge thanks to Oliver for letting us share his work with all of the skip hire industry!

I reckon the photographer, Immo Klink, was paid to distract him

Never mind Skip Hire, this is Garden Hire!

Today the TopSkips Skip Hire blog brings you the penultimate in our series of 7 skip conversions by London based Designer Oliver Bishop-Young. If you missed the story behind Olivers work, here’s where he got his inspiration:
“I saw a 1995 advert depicting a whole street throwing their ‘chintz’ furniture out and into a skip. The image revealed the potential for a skip to become a point of both material and experiential exchange within the community. From then on I submerged myself in the affairs of skips”.
The last two skip conversions we’ve highlighted have been about the ’skip house’, Oliver Bishop-Youngs interpretation of what a home in a skip would look like from both the outside and inside. This week Oliver has completed the look by creating a skip garden.
Over to Olly:
“Many flats have no garden or outside space whatsoever. A skip can provide that space and by filling it with waste rubble and garden material you can have a vegetable patch, flower bed or lawn on your doorstep”.
And the proof’s in the pudding as they say, the photo’s below by Tomas Valenzuela show Olivers innovative way of giving your property some much needed and flexible garden space! As Oliver says: “The skip can come and go for the summer or be a permanent fixture”.
Brilliant!

Living the Skip Hire Dream!

As you know: Wednesday is skip conversion day, when we showcase an alternative use for the common skip.
Last week the TopSkips skip hire blog showcased Oliver Bishop-Young’s skip home, a skip with a roof made from ‘for-sale’ signs. Today we’re stepping inside this ‘des res’ to reveal the life of your average skip dweller, so join me now as we go through the rust hole…
Over to you, Oliver…
“I spent a couple of hours searching the streets near my house for items in skips that were still useful. I then set about installing the objects such as a carpet, chair, TV and radiator as though they were in use in the skip”.
And look at the result! It may be bijou but mortgage’s are hard to come by these days so this could be the answer to affordable housing. Or alternatively, as Olly says, instead of that conservatory you were planning…
“It added an extra room to the house. People began to approach me for the objects in the skip. Changing the display of or reorganizing the objects found in skips made them more desirable. People could see the potential left in the object and they seemed clean”.
You’ve got to admit that’s pretty fascinating, by putting discarded items back in their natural setting, albeit in a skip, people can better see their value. They stop being useless and start being functional again. A great example of recycling in action.

“What’s that you’re reading darling”? Why, it’s the ‘7 secrets to successful skip hire’ of course

Skip Hire Answers!

TopSkips skip hire blog has the answers to your questions…
Q: I am looking to hire a skip for general garden rubbish and I believe you do a wait and load service – please can you let me know the details?
A: Why certainly! All the skip sizes we supply for regular skip hire, we can also supply for our Wait and Load service, from compact 2 yarders through to large Roll On Roll Off (RORO) 40 yard mega skips!
The Wait and Load service is exactly that, the wagon will bring a skip to your property and wait while you load it. The standard waiting time for a wait and load service is 30 minutes with the option to arrange a longer time if needed.
Prices for wait and load are similar to regular skip hire and will vary depending on your location.
The wait and Load service is particularly popular in city centres where street space is limited and there’s less private land on which to position a skip. Plus, if you live in a large city you may find it takes a while for a skip permit to be issued, with Wait and Load you don’t need a permit which adds to the speed factor of the service!
And there it is: Wait and Load. Case closed.

Hire a Skip – Get a Free House!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a skip with some for sale signs put over it to make the shape of a roof.
That intro probably needs some work.
Talking of work; what a piece of artwork we have in todays TopSkips skip hire blog. After 3 Wednesdays of your average skip contents; a swimming pool, skate ramp and park-land, Oliver’s really pushed out the proverbial!
Here’s what he had to say about his ’skip house’:
“With soaring mortgage rates and the potential recession; affordable housing is high on the agenda. This dwelling provides an inexpensive option especially as it’s located in central London”.
Good point, can you imagine the estate agent showing you round: “a delightful space, bijou, open plan, regular waste collections, rusted, I mean, rustic”.
And if you don’t fancy it as your new home, I reckon it provides a fantastic solution to the problem of skip jacking, although your neighbours may notice their ‘for sale’ signs keep disappearing!
skiphirehouse.jpg
Is it just me or is that house looking at the ’skip house’ in a ‘you’re not a house, check me out, I’m a house‘ kind of way?
Just me then.
Anyway, get hold of Oliver at olly@oliverbishopyoung.co.uk and Don’t miss next Wednesdays skip conversion when we’ll lift the lid on the skip house to see what’s inside!
