Asbestos in its raw formASBESTOS FACT FILE

  • Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found all over the world but mainly in Canada, South Africa, Australia and Northern Italy.

  • There are 3 main types of asbestos:

    1. White (Chrysotile) - the fibres are long and curly and have been used to make aprons and blankets. These fibres are more likely to be caught on the lining of the bronchi and coughed out of the mouth.

    2. Blue (Crocidolite) - the fibres are needlelike and extremely fine so instead of being caught by bronchi they pass directly into the lung.

    3. Brown (Amosite) - also needlelike in formation but thicker than blue asbestos

  • Asbestos in the handThe finer the diameter of the needlelike particles the more dangerous the asbestos

  • Asbestos fibres are invisible. Exposure comes from use of asbestos in lagging or from destruction of constructions containing the substance such as garage roofs.

  • Since asbestos is naturally occurring, nearly all of us have had some exposure but of a harmless nature. Most people suffer no ill effects. It is still not clear why some people are more prone to contracting asbestos-related illnesses than others.

  • Illnesses that can occur include asbestosis (fibrosis of the lung), diffuse pleural thickening (lining of lung thickens), pleural plaques (fibrous tissue on lining of lung, not life-threatening), mesothelioma (tumours) and lung cancer
